Exploring the Majestic De La Poer Tower: A Journey Through Waterford’s History

Teetering on the top of 70-foot-tall De La Poer Tower, County Waterford, Ireland.

In the peaceful corner of Waterford, Ireland, stands the historic De La Poer Tower. The journey begins at the Tower Hill car park, leading through ancient, dense forests with old oak trees and stone walls from a bygone era. The path through the forest and a local road creates a beautiful 4.5 km loop, easily completed in an hour.

De La Poer Tower, standing 70 feet tall, was built in 1785 by George De La Poer Beresford, the first Marquess of Waterford, in memory of his son who died in a horse-riding accident at age 13.

The tower features robust stone walls and a 92-step spiral staircase leading to the top. From here, visitors can view five different counties along with mountain ranges and majestic landscapes.

Along the way, visitors pass Hussian Gap, an exit to a local road with the story of the war horse Jock, buried here by the Marquess of Waterford due to his special affection for the horse.

The journey ends when returning to the black gate where the trip began, bringing a sense of tranquility and admiration for Ireland’s history and nature.
