Archaeologists working in the La Huerta de Otero Archaeological Zone in Mérida, Spain, have uncovered a Roman-era mosaic featuring an image of Medusa.
Location and Historical Significance
The La Huerta de Otero Archaeological Zone is situated on the western side of Mérida, which was once part of the Roman city of Augusta Emerita. Founded in 25 BC by Augustus to resettle Emeriti soldiers from the veteran legions of the Cantabrian Wars, Augusta Emerita became one of the largest Roman centers in Hispania. It served as the capital of the province of Lusitania, spanning an area of over 20,000 square kilometers.
Recent Excavations and Findings
In the recent excavations, a significant mosaic was found in the main room of a Roman domus. This mosaic features Medusa, one of the three monstrous Gorgons from Greek mythology. Researchers believe that this depiction served as a protective symbol for the inhabitants of the domus, akin to other Medusa representations in various Greek and Roman artefacts and mosaics.
Description of the Mosaic
The Medusa image is positioned in the center of an octagonal medallion, flanked by peacocks at all four corners, symbolizing the four seasons. The entire mosaic covers an area of approximately 30 square meters and includes geometric patterns along with floral and animal motifs, such as birds and fish.
Expert Commentary
Félix Palma, Director of the Monumental City Consortium, remarked on the exceptional nature of the site due to the remarkable conservation of the remains. He highlighted not only the mosaic but also the paintings and sculptural motifs that adorn the well-preserved house.
Additional Discoveries
The excavations have also brought to light a 40-meter section of the Roman wall that once defended the city, along with the remnants of a road running parallel to it on the interior.
